Sumo Wrestling Match
Okay, so I must admit I was always interested to got to a sumo match, so I was excited when our friends invited us on a spur of the moment day trip to go see it. And Sumo wrestling, at least the big matches only happen twice a year in Tokyo. We took the train into town while I kids were in school so it was a bit of a date day, with only one baby in tow. The area around the train station had various stautues, stores, and artwork devoted to sumo.
Before we went to the match we decided to eat like the sumos, which is Chanko Nabe. It was delicious and very filling. The resteraunt we ate at was really fun and even gave us a baby bed for Jane. I loved the food except for the smoked eggplant (but not to worry Jane loved it and ate mine, and several other peoples' at our table). Also the garnish for our food was puffed rice still on the plant. Very cool.
Then we made it to the actual match. Sumo wrestling matches have so much ceremony to them including singers, salt throwing, and order. This made it feel very different than any sporting event I had ever been to. It felt more majestic and calm somehow. But these athletes were powerful and the actual wrestling time could be very intense. The ceremony of it did make it feel a little slow moving, but the wrestling made up for it. Overall a very fun day, glad we went.
That night the boys all just wanted to wrestle with dad.
